Maturity Assessment

The maturity assessment gives you a single governance score (0--100) that measures how well-governed your AWS environment is. The score breaks down into four dimensions, each tracking a different aspect of governance maturity. A prioritised roadmap tells you exactly what to do next.

Governance Score

Your governance score is displayed prominently at the top of the maturity section. It includes:

  • Score (0--100) -- Colour-coded: green (80+), yellow (60--79), red (below 60).
  • Phase -- Your current governance maturity phase (Visibility, Control, or Optimise).
  • Trend -- Whether your score has increased or decreased since the previous assessment.
  • Sparkline -- A mini chart showing your score history over recent assessments.

Dimensions

The governance score is composed of four weighted dimensions:

DimensionWeightWhat It Measures
Tag Governance30%Tag compliance rate, policy coverage, strategy adoption, auto-remediation status
Service Control25%SCP guardrail coverage across security categories, drift status
Account Structure25%OU organisation, account coverage, management account connectivity
Cost Allocation20%Cost allocation tag activation and coverage

Each dimension shows:

  • Its individual score (0--100).
  • Its current phase (Visibility, Control, or Optimise).
  • A horizontal progress bar.

Phase Thresholds

Each dimension progresses through three phases based on its score:

PhaseThresholdMeaning
VisibilityBelow 40Early stage -- you are discovering your posture
Control40--74Mid stage -- you are actively enforcing policies
Optimise75+ (with no blockers)Advanced -- you are refining and automating

Your overall governance phase is determined by the lowest-phase dimension. All dimensions must reach a phase before the overall score advances to it.

Single-Account Adjustments

For single-account setups (no AWS Organisation), the Service Control and Account Structure dimensions are marked as not applicable. Their weights are redistributed proportionally to the remaining dimensions, so your score is not penalised for features that are unavailable to you.

Capabilities

Below the dimensions, three capability areas summarise your functional maturity:

CapabilityCovers
TaggingTag policies, compliance monitoring, violation remediation, auto-remediation
Policy EnforcementSCP deployment, guardrail coverage, drift detection (hidden for single accounts)
Audit & AssessmentGovernance assessment, compliance scanning, evidence collection

Each capability shows its current phase badge.

Roadmap

The roadmap is a prioritised list of actions to improve your governance score. Actions are grouped by priority:

PriorityWhen to Act
NowHigh-impact actions you should take immediately
NextActions to tackle once the "Now" items are complete
LaterLower-priority items for ongoing refinement

Each action shows:

  • Title and description.
  • Phase badge -- Which governance phase the action belongs to.
  • Status icon -- Whether the action is actionable, locked (prerequisite not met), or coming soon.
  • Do it button -- For actionable items, clicking this scrolls to and opens the relevant section on the Governance page.
tip

Focus on "Now" priority actions first. Completing these typically has the largest impact on your governance score and unlocks additional actions in the "Next" tier.

Locked Actions

Some roadmap actions are locked until prerequisites are met. For example, deploying SCPs requires a management account connection, and activating cost allocation tags requires tag policies to be in place. The lock icon shows the reason and what needs to happen first.

Assessment Schedule

Governance assessments run:

  • Automatically on a daily schedule.
  • On demand when you click Run Assessment on the Governance page.
  • After key events such as completing onboarding or a governance evaluation.

Staleness

If more than 24 hours have passed since the last assessment, a warning banner appears with the assessment age and a Reassess Now button. Run a fresh assessment after making significant governance changes to see their impact on your score immediately.

Assessment History

Guardian Pro retains your assessment history, allowing you to track your governance score and dimension breakdowns over time. Use the date range filter to view trends across specific periods.

Next Steps
